Beyond: Stolen Flames, Forbidden Fruit, and Telephone Booths
by 826 Valencia Youth Authors
Students reflect on their pasts, write new stories, and create their own futures in this work encompassing dozens of students from one school. Hear about ancient battles, Indigenous traditions, tales of creation, and memoirs from everyday life. Meet tornado survivors, real-life heroes, single parents, a fairy godmother, and Greek Titans.
— Simon Traub-Epstein, International Library of Young Authors
From the Student Editorial Board: “This book is a collection of both personal essays and fictional stories written by students at June Jordan School for Equity. At first glance, June Jordan might seem like your typical San Francisco public school. But beyond the forest of McClaren and through the fog of the Bay Area weather, our building sits on top of a hill surrounded by trees like a castle surrounded by a moat. When we first started, we thought of myths as make- believe. Myths are still alive today when we tell stories about our families and our heroes to current generations and generations to come.”
