JAYU
by Seonrin Kim
From the publisher: “Based on the record of the solo exhibition held in 2020, which centered around the theme of thought, this book reflects on the process. It offers a glimpse into the struggles of a teenage creator preparing for an exhibition.
I constantly wondered why I only worked on such themes. There was no other way. It was the turning point that changed my life. I couldn't help but pour all my affection into this. Now, it feels like destiny. This had to happen. -p. 116
My thoughts, which were overwhelmingly complex, always oppressed me. Concerns about my identity, anxieties about the future, and frustration in my relationships-these all weighed heavily on me. I wanted to break free from those suffocating moments. So, I wrote everything down. By gathering all of it, I waited for the future me to rediscover those records. Strangely, the records seemed to have been waiting for this very moment, shining at the perfect time. When I faced dilemmas, I found answers in my past writings, and when creating artwork, they served as a source of inspiration. The works created alongside these records were eventually showcased in an exhibition titled <JAYU(freedom)>. Initially, my work began with an attempt to understand the mechanism of thought. However, I eventually realized that my contemplation of ‘though’ was ultimately about seeking the freedom to live as my true self.”
