Not Exactly Heaven

by Center City Public Charter School Students

Students write about themselves as well as what goes on around and beyond them. Art pairs with truth in this collection as authors look at where they came from and where they are going. Hear about their experiences riding roller coasters, playing soccer, learning to swim, and going to summer camp.

— Simon Traub-Epstein, International Library of Young Authors

From Foreword by Kwame Alexander: “What if you put a group of students into a classroom and introduced them to literature that took them on an epic adventure-like say, The Odyssey. And then you taught them how to craft good writing-stories and essays-and just let them write about their own heroes' journeys. Allowed them to express their thoughts, feelings, ideas, observations, and experiences about the world. And their place in it. What if you then equipped those students with the tools to publish a collection of their work? Could they summon the focus and courage to accomplish such a lofty goal? Could we teach them to do the write thing? Could we provide a literary experience that was fun, inspirational, and transformative?
