The Haunted Garden

by Pacific Elementary School Students

Find inside a plentiful mix of individual and group work. Superpowers, scares, and autumn gourds await. Hear about a purple cat, queer love, a watchful ghost, a mysterious potion, a Halloween dance, and how to carve a pumpkin.

— Simon Traub-Epstein, International Library of Young Authors

From the introduction by Zuzu and Katie: “Horror was a staple during this program. The writers, despite their young ages, were fascinated by everything ghoulish and macabre. We cannot even begin to count how many ‘spooky story’ prompts we brought in, yet every time, they wrote to them with vigor. Their favorite prompt was ‘Abandoned Places,’ in which every student would pick a printed photo of an abandoned place (school, hospital, theme park, house) and tell its story. Maybe you can pick out which stories were inspired by these pictures.”
